My Natural Hair Journey!

2 Years Natural!

Happy Monday lovelies! I’m so thrilled you’ve taken the time out of your day to check out today’s post. This post is all about my natural hair journey so far. I’ll be sharing why I went natural, current favorite products, answering questions, and sharing a few tips/advice.

*Before we get started, I am NOT a hair professional nor consider myself a natural hair guru* ( awkward laugh )

The Beginning and Why

July'16- Colored + Blown out

Aug'16 Beginning of no heat. First attempt at a "natural" style.

Now that I’ve cleared that up, let’s get right into it! So, I’m going to try to start from the beginning and still keep it short and sweet. Growing up I had a few perms here and there, but weaves weren’t big in my household at all. I always loved my hair and it's length. I saw my mom and older sister wear braids and protective styles, but my first set of braids didn’t happen until high school! As far as weave, extensions, sew-ins, etc. go, my parents always said they wouldn’t pay for it.

I ended up really getting into clip ins in high school, which damaged my hair after a while. What did I do to “fix” this? More weave, aka sew ins. Which also damaged my hair after a while due to poor maintenance. So I started wearing my own hair in blow outs, or “straight.”

July'16 - Wash n Go attempt (LOL)

April'18 - Successful Wash n Go!

The more I saw women look awesome with their natural pattern, the more I wanted to try it. So, the summer of 2016 I had my hair professionally cut and colored, and decided to use no more heat to transition natural! The main reason I went natural is because I knew it’d be a challenge in the confidence area. It was a huge part of me getting to know myself, hence Justbriyourself Blogging came about shortly after! The hardest part was getting over the usual standard to have long hair. It wasn't a struggle for me in the past, so this was very new!

Fav Style + Products

My go-to style these days has been flexi-rod sets! They last me up to two weeks. Products in rotation that I currently love are the Mielle Organics Babassu Conditioning Shampoo, followed up with their Babassu Oil and Mint Deep conditioner. For conditioning, the Aussie Moist 3 minute Miracle does wonders! When it comes to styling I really enjoy using the Mielle Organics Brazilian Curly Cocktail Curl Mouse or the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Styling Lotion. Also, when I don’t want to use shampoo, the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Cleansing Conditioner works awesome!

I also have always done the L (leave in). O (oil). C (cream/styler) method since I’ve been natural. Castor or Coconut Oil are my favorites.

Q&A

Now that I’ve talked your ear off about ME, I want to answer some questions from YOU. These are questions received via Instagram.

Q: What hair color do you use? It’s so pretty!

A: Thank you! I’m honestly not sure! I box dyed it back in April and don’t remember the color. Since then, it’s faded and become super light due to the sun but I love it!

Q: Do you roller wrap your hair every night?

A: thankfully, no! I’m usually able to apply a flexi-rod set, and make it last a good week. Sometimes, if I want more definition and it’s been over a week, I’ll add a few before bed in the spots that are blah.

Q: How long have you been natural?

A: A little over 2 years.

Q: Fav thing about being natural?

A: The versatility! The styles are never ending.

Tips for your Journey

Before I go, I want to give a little advice. Going natural isn’t the easiest thing to do. It takes patience, confidence, and regimen, but you CAN do it! Also, don’t be discouraged by length or hair type. Although everyone’s hair looks and grows different, It’s all beautiful. Embrace what you’re blessed with!

Thank you all so so much for stopping by once again! The continuous support is so appreciated. Be sure sure to subscribe below for future updates. You don't want to miss my 2 Year Bloggiversary and all the awesomeness lined up for this fall!
